How To Boost Your Self Confidence – 17 Ways

17 Ways to increase self confidence

Every single person who lives in this strange world is amazing and superb in his own way, but not everyone achieves their goals or success.

There are several reasons for that, but in this article I’m going to focus on answering the question “how to boost your self confidence?”. Some people are extremely confident, and that shows in their actions.

Every successful person vibrates that confident energy, because they know nothing will stop them and they will achieve their goals no matter what.

However, some people might have the same skills as other successful people but they lack self confidence and they usually struggle in life, especially when they are forced to take action and step it up.

Low self confidence can be related to many things. It all depends on your psychology. Most of us don’t have enough confidence, because of specific experiences in our lives, whether it’s emotional, psychological or physical, you name it…

For example, let’s say you have a wonderful loving relationship with somebody and it lasts for a long time. But one day, the person that you thought is your soul mate, leaves you for another person.

Your heart is broken and you feel completely destroyed. It leaves a big mark in your subconscious mind and now you lost confidence when it comes to finding someone new.

You can’t talk to or interact with the opposite sex, because you start getting nervous and can’t think of a single word you could say.

This is just an example. There are so many things and experiences in life that can affect your confidence in a negative way.

With low confidence, you will be missing out on many opportunities and chances to get the best out of life.

So, how can you increase your confidence and live your life to the fullest?

How To Boost Your Self Confidence – Never Miss A Chance Again!

Like I’ve said, if you want to be a successful person, you must be confident in your own abilities. Not all of us are born with amazing self confidence and some of us struggle a lot with it.

But the good news is, you can definitely boost your self confidence. It’s a personality trait like any other. You can become more confident if you practice and take actions towards improving this trait.

As most things in life, it takes time and dedication to become more confident. So, don’t expect to get instant results when you’re trying something new. One thing for sure, confidence will slowly come to you if you focus on achieving this goal.

Here are 17 ways you can boost your self confidence:

1. Think About Who You Are

Take a moment and think about it. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses so try to figure out what are yours. For example, If you have never tried playing basketball, then I’m sure you can’t be confident in a basketball court.

Try to figure out in what situations you might feel confident, and what situations make you feel out of control.

2. Negative Thoughts Can Totally Destroy You

When you failed at something remember that it’s important to still think positively, no matter the situation. Negative thoughts are self confidence killers.

Sometimes, when you have bad day, you let your mind flow with the negative thoughts. The problem is, those bad thoughts are corrupting your mind and it will have a huge negative effect on whatever you are doing.

So, try to relax and think about something else (Sometimes it’s really hard to do that, you will have to practice a lot).

You might ask, “but how can I think of positive things if something negative just happened?”. Well, it takes time to develop the ability to “kill” negative thoughts and turn them into positive ones, but you have to start by learning how to relax more.

Once you learn to relax, even at stressful moments, it becomes easier to think positively all the time.

Don't be negative

3. Work On Small Things

Sometimes, when we set huge goals that take a lot time to complete, in the process we might lose confidence or the will to continue working on that specific goal (especially if your self confidence is low).

Try to do something small, like cleaning your room or cleaning your PC from junk files and viruses. When you complete a small goal, your confidence will be boosted, and you can get back to working on that huge goal of yours.

But Donny, how can something small like cleaning the room, increase my confidence?“. That’s a great question Mr. Reader!

When you finish any kind of task, even a small one, you boost your confidence, because you’re proving yourself that you can complete goals that you’ve set for yourself.

Once you get on to the more serious goal of yours, you’ll have the mindset that you can achieve this goal.

4. Take Care Of Yourself And Dress Properly

It’s a very simple way to boost your confidence, yet so many people don’t realize the power within dressing properly and taking care of thyself.

Take a shower, shave your beard, simply take care of your hygiene and it will make you feel better and more confident. Also, dress properly. You must look and feel good in your clothes if you want more confidence in yourself.

Did you know that wearing a suit can boost your self confidence? In fact, I’ve experienced this only recently and I can assure you, it does increase confidence quite a bit!

If you don’t pay attention to how you look, not only will you have less confidence, you will also APPEAR less confident in everyone’s eyes.

5. Clean The Mess In Your House

Some people actually prefer when everything around them is basically chaos, they feel better in messy surroundings.

However, most can’t stand the mess. They simply can’t focus on doing something when there are dirty dishes, junk, garbage and all kinds of stuff they have to take care of.

When you clean that mess it will no longer affect your thought process. Remember that your environment partially represents you.

Make your room clean and your mind will be clean as well!

Get rid of all the mess

6. Act Positive

Whatever you do, try doing it with positive energy. You are what you do, so if you can change what you do, then you automatically will change who you are.

When you are communicating with someone, you are sending energy to that person, so send only positive energy instead of negative and you will receive positive energy from that person as well.

The less negativity you have in your life, the more confident you will become. It’s the law of attraction. Positivity attracts more positivity, the same way as negativity attracts more negativity.

So, be more positive Mr. Reader! Okay?

7. Everyone Is Equal

People with low self confidence usually think that other people are better than them. This kind of mindset is very bad. Everyone is equal. Nobody succeeds by luck, everyone had to start somewhere.

Nobody was born with amazing self confidence. You have to realize that you are just like anyone else. If others can be confident, then YOU can as well!

If you manage to change the way you think about others and start seeing yourself as being equal to everyone else, you will automatically boost your self confidence.

8. Try To Be Prepared

Sometimes unexpected things happen in life, but most of the times you CAN prepare for things that are GOING to happen.

Let’s say you have a history exam tomorrow, of course you won’t feel confident writing that exam if you haven’t studied before.

However if you spend some time studying, you will simply feel prepared for that exam, and that is a boost to self – confidence.

Simply, always be prepared for upcoming experiences to be more confident about it!

9. Good Old Exercise!

Exercise or play some sports. Those kind of activities will boost your self confidence. If you want to get stronger, grow some muscle or simply stay healthy, then exercising is your best friend.

After each workout you will feel like you’re on top of the world! And once the results starts showing (muscle growth, endurance and so on.) you will feel even better!

It’s a very good way to increase confidence but a lot of people let their laziness get to them. I know, it’s hard to exercise, it’s hard to make yourself go to the gym.

But you have to beat your lazy self and start taking action if you want to get anywhere in life. Just go exercise and feel more confident about yourself! Cmon Mr. Reader, you can do this!

Don't forget to exercise!

10. Knowledge And Wisdom

Study hard, search for information, learn more languages, read books, watch documentary movies, meet and talk with interesting people and basically educate yourself whenever it’s possible, because the more you know the more confident you will feel.

If you’re full of knowledge and wisdom, you will always have something interesting to say and you will feel smarter, that way self confidence will follow along.

11. Speak Slowly And Loudly

A person who feels he is not worth being heard will speak quickly and silently, because the fear of rejection is really strong and that shows lack of confidence.

However someone who speaks slowly and loudly most likely is very confident and everyone want to listen to confident people. also try to stand tall, even if your posture is bad. People who stand tall look appear more confident.

12. Be Kind To Others

If you are kind and generous to people around you, you send tons of positive energy to them and they will send positive energy back to you.

So, always smile and me kind to everyone. When someone asks for your help, even if it’s something small, you should always provide help (if you can).

Just by helping out one person, you will feel great about yourself and your confidence will be boosted for the entire day.

Most people ask for help but never help others. If you want to be treated with kindness, you must treat everyone else with kindness. Law of attraction baby!

Be kind to others

13. Be Grateful For Everything

For some reason, people always want things that they don’t currently have. They never appreciate things that they have until they lose them.

Try to be grateful for what you already have. Remember that a lot of people in the world don’t have what you have and they would love to have it.

When you wake up every morning, try feeling gratitude even for the small things like your bed, pillow, clothes, food, water, dog, cat and basically anything else.

Just tell yourself that you love all those things. Tell yourself that you love your life. You will begin to feel rich and abundant inside.

Grateful people have better self image and that is great for self confidence.

14. Start A New Habit

It doesn’t have to be something big or hard to achieve. Just focus on something small like, every morning when you wake up, exercise or meditate for 10-20 minutes.

After 21 day (it’s a magical number) of doing it, you will feel great, because your new habit will improve your daily life and even if it’s a small improvement, it’s still good and you will feel awesome for that little achievement.

Developing a new habit will definitely boost your self confidence, because you’re proving yourself that you can achieve your goals.

When you’re forming new healthy habits, you’re developing a mindset to always achieve your goals no matter what. That is confidence at its finest!

15. Do It Yourself!

Always try to do everything on your own. Don’t wait for someone else to do it for you.

For example, when you are hungry, don’t wait until someone prepares food for you. Do it yourself or at least help them out with this task.

Another example, when you’re short on money, don’t ask your parents or friends for money, unless you are in trouble and really need it… It’s best if figure out a way to get money on your own without any help.

Try to become more independent, because you will be teaching yourself to survive in this world without anyone’s help.

When you manage to do specific tasks without the help of others, you are becoming more confident about yourself, because you know that you will survive no matter what.

Don't ask for help

16. Don’t Be Afraid Of Mistakes

Everyone makes mistakes. Every successful person in this world has made many mistakes. But the reason they achieved success is, because if they fell down 10 times, they stood up 11 times.

No matter how many mistakes you make, you must always learn from them and take it as experience. We must make mistakes in order to become something better than we currently are.

The most important thing is, LEARNING from your mistakes. If you constantly make the same mistakes, you are not progressing any further.

When you make a mistake, you must learn from it, so you would never do this mistake again.

Whenever you make a mistake, you end up thinking badly about yourself. Instead of bashing yourself with negative words, try to look at the positive side. Take it as a good experience, like a lesson.

We get many lessons throughout our lives and it’s really important to take everything you can from those lessons. If you change your mindset about mistakes, you will feel more confident and commit less mistakes.

17. Don’t Shy Away From A Challenge

You should always try new things and accept all challenges (unless the challenge is dangerous or just stupid).

If you’re always sitting in your comfort zone, you can’t improve and your confidence is going to be low. Whenever an opportunity presents itself, go for it. Doesn’t matter what it is, you must step outside your comfort zone.

You must beat your fears or you’ll stay in the same position forever. People always fear new things, whether it’s public speaking or simply starting a new habit, no matter how hard it sounds to you, beat that fear or you can’t progress.

You are simply missing out on life if you’re not trying new things all the time. And your confidence is low, because of that.

So, if you want to increase your self confidence, then beat every challenge that life throws at you!

Life Doesn’t Wait

As you can see, there are many answers to the question ”how to boost your self confidence”, but every person is different, so you will have to search for the answer that is just right for you.

Life doesn’t wait. When you are too shy to ask a girl out or too scared to ask for a promotion, someone else WILL. And when that happens, you will feel really for not taking the chance.

My advice is to stop procrastinating and take action TODAY that will benefit your life in many ways. You’re not getting any younger as time goes by. And if you are not getting any better as time passes, then you’re just getting old.

Do you want to spend the rest of your life getting old and achieve nothing? Go through life with confidence and take control of every situation.

I recommend that anyone who battles negative thinking learn to do something daily that will challenge their own minds noise.

If you can start a blog that exposes yourself, over time you will learn that it’s not a big deal. When you spend too much time worrying about the stuff nobody cares about, it just distracts you from the important things.

Each step that you take when you design and build a website starts to unleash confidence. Keep it up and keep doing things which scare you.

Before you know it you have become a fantastic writer who can handle anything that comes up. Talk about a boost in confidence…

What do you think, small steps and lot’s of practice or rush through things and create more problems?

    1. Donny says:

Yes, small steps and a lot of practice is the way to go! Rushing through things never works if you want any success in life. Mostly, when you try to do a lot of things as fast as possible, you’re much less productive than if you were to take it easy!

  2. Cyrus says:

Thanks for this list, I really appreciate it. I especially like # 16, not being afraid to make mistakes.

I remember watching something by a former Navy Seal, and basically what he said was, mistakes just show us the place we need to work more on. And I’ve really tried taking that to heart. It’s helped me view life differently, and have confidence in situations where most people aren’t confident.

    1. Donny says:

Yeah, mistakes and failures should be taken as lessons that you can learn something from.

  3. Samantha Harris says:

Great post, I struggled with confidence for a long time, I saw confidence as a form of arrogance and wanted nothing to do with it. Once I realized it was really affecting my life, like not taking chances or going for opportunities that could be potentially good for me, I had to start changing my perception of myself. I like what you said about learning new things and wisdom as a way to boost confidence, I noticed it to be true about small tasks as well. Now I understand the importance of confidence, I was completely wrong about it being arrogance, and those who act arrogantly actually are the ones with less self confidence.

    1. Donny says:

Sometimes we can perceive specific things in the wrong way. When we truly believe that our way of thinking is true, it’s hard to accept the truth. You were right to change your way of thinking about confidence, because it’s definitely not a form of arrogance.

  4. Josie says:

I used to lack self-confidence until I started practicing different ways of thinking. I learned to control my thoughts and think of things in a positive way.
I agree that it is important to realize that everyone is equal and special in their own way.
I use meditation to improve myself and my own mind which really helps with building self-confidence.
The most important thing to realize is that it does not matter what anyone else thinks of you. If you stop worrying about what people think and just be yourself that confidence will come naturally.
Never compare yourself to another and just be the best you that you can be!
The things you have listed here are all great ways to make yourself feel good! I really enjoyed reading this, thanks for the great article!

    1. Donny says:

Yes, too many people are trapped inside their own mind, ruining their confidence by thinking of negative thoughts. Glad you enjoyed the article!

  5. Sophia says:

I love this. A couple things I like to do to boost my self confidence is; I do one thing a day that scares me, I face that fear and I DO IT, which leaves me feeling brave. I also affirm positive things to myself and I try to visualize where I want to be 5 years from now. I also create boundaries and make sure no one crosses them. These are things I feel are important to me in my self worth and value.

    1. Donny says:

Yeah, doing one thing a day that scares you is a great approach! I also to the same. Getting out of your comfort zone is really important to grow as a person and to become more confident!

  6. Israel says:

    Hey Donny!

Nice post! I really think that one of the most imporant ones is number 7. Everyone is equal.

Many people end up not trying things because they think less of themselves and compare to others.

You don’t know what other people are going through, and maybe they look really confident on the outside, but they are dealing with a lot of fear inside. But I guess the more you practice it, the sooner that fear starts to vanish.

Thanks for sharing. This is very helpful advice for everyone!

    1. Donny says:

Yes, you can never really know what anyone is going through in their life. A person who looks very confident, might just feel extreme anxiety, but he’s good at hiding it. Practice is really important here!

  7. Annie says:

17 tips to build self confidence. Pretty valuable stuff here. Thank you. I have pretty good self-esteem, but even so, there are times where my self-esteem gets low. These are good reminders and ideas. Thank you.
I clicked on some of your links, and they took me to content-laden posts. You have a lot of great info here.

    1. Donny says:

Everyone can experience low self-esteem from time to time. The important thing is, get back on track as fast as possible. If you let yourself stay in this state for a longer period of time, it’s going to affect you and it might be hard to recover your confidence in yourself.

  8. Angie says:

Good tips! I have applied many of these over the years, and a lot of it came down to a “fake it til you make it” kind of thing. But it was amazing how much it really worked. I think the gratitude part is the one that helped me the most. Thanks for a couple more ideas I can add to my arsenal!

    1. Donny says:

Haha, “fake it till you make it” is definitely a great way to actually MAKE IT. It works like a charm. I guess you can’t know how well it works until you try it, right?

Gratitude is a big part of my life as well. It’s really important to feel gratitude for everything!

  9. travel and treatz savita says:

I agree with most of these. The one that always makes me roll my eyes, is the attire. While i agree with those statements at the extreme ends. I generally believe the clothes do not make the man. I think you should dress in what empowers you rather than what a magazine /fashion icon suggests that you wear. Someone like me, is certainly not more empowered in suit and high heels than in a pair of jeans and flip flops. I’m also prepared to stand my ground in those flip flops on any matter 🙂

    1. Donny says:

Yes, it’s important to feel comfortable in the clothes you wear. I really enjoy wearing a suit, because it makes me feel comfotable and more confident. But for example, if I didn’t like suits and I had to wear them, there would be no positive effects on my confidence, most likely it would only make the situation worse.

  10. Tom says:

Great tips on how to boost your self confidence. Who couldn’t use more self confidence? I know it is a key to a successful existence. Thinking positively, and exercising I think are very important, as they go hand in hand. I will bookmark this article so that I have it for reference. Well done.

    1. Donny says:

Glad you enjoyed it! Yes exercising and thinking positively is really important! A positive mindset always attracts the perfect outcomes:)

  11. Furkan says:

These are all great tips and I think I can start taking care of myself more since I have been neglecting it for a quite some time. And I used to feel just better when I do it. I will definitely start it by doing it.

    1. Donny says:

It always makes you feel better when you’re taking care of yourself! When you feel better about yourself, you become and appear more confident to others.

  12. jessie palaypay says:

Another thing that helps boost confidence in my opinion is hanging around other people who have self confidence and builds it in other people. I think it eliminates a lot of the negative conditioning that society instills within us when they tell us things like we can’t accomplish a certain goal.

    1. Donny says:

Great advice! Definitely, hanging out with the right people can always influence you to become better as well. If you’re always with confident people, you’ll have no other option but to become confident as well.

  13. Matthew says:

Some brilliant advice here, I have recently broken up with my girlfriend of 10 years and it has knocked me for 6. I have tried to forget but its just too hard. I have honestly never felt this low before and its starting to get me down. I’m going to go through this list that you have given us and see if it will help to boost my self-confidence and hopefully start living my life again. Many Thanks

    1. Donny says:

I know, it can be really hard when you lose someone you loved for a very long time. But you must start living your life instead of bashing yourself and thinking negative thoughts only. Try to feel gratitude for the things you have, even the small things like I’ve mentioned in the article. It’s going to make you happier, because you’ll appreciate everything.
